The October 7, 2023, attack on Israel can be compared to 9/11 or Pearl Harbor. Where does this tragic event fit into the history of Israel’s wars? Join Professor Paul Liptz to explore the impact of the 1967 Six Day War and the October 6, 1973, Yom Kippur War on Israeli society; the history of the Gaza strip and development of Hamas; and Israel’s internal tensions in recent years. As we attempt to understand these realities, we will ask: “What went wrong?” and “What should we do now”?

Join Rabbi Geffen to learn what Jewish wisdom has to say about the “hot topics” of our time. *These classes focus on the given week’s hot topic through the lens of traditional Jewish texts (Torah, Talmud, Post-Halachic Literature and Commentaries.) The classes do not reflect any particular political point of view, nor is their intention to implicitly or explicitly endorse any particular political party or candidate in any way. As such, you may encounter viewpoints from Jewish tradition of which you were previously unaware and/or about which you may find personally challenging.

Meet at NSCI
Join Rabbi Lisa Greene and the Women of NSCI on a day trip to the Jewish Museum Milwaukee for a docent-led tour of their exhibit “Women Pulling at the Threads of Social Discourse.”
This exhibit explores how female artists, using textiles as their medium, subvert the social expectations of crafting by lambasting this soft medium with social and political awareness. A powerful vehicle for fostering discussion, this exhibit centers female voices as they reflect on subjects like the right to vote, reproductive rights, and the intersection of femininity, race, history and feminist socio-politics.
Space is limited, so RSVP soon! Email wnsci@nsci.org to RSVP by Monday, November 6. Please include your name, email, and phone number, and if you will need a ride or are willing to drive others.

As we have done annually for many years, join us on this special Shabbat to hear an NSCI congregant share their reflections on their military service, Jewish identity, and the intersection of the two. This year’s speaker is David Cohen, current Brotherhood co-president, who served in the Navy from 1984–89 and as a reservist through 1996.
