Tikkun Olam is our Jewish calling for playing our part in repairing the world around us. We at NSCI have made Mitzvah projects of all kinds as a way to connect with each other, the broader community, and ensure we make a significant shift in righting inequities around us. Back to School Donation Drive for Cradles to Crayons September 2021

Help Cradles to Crayons provide essential items that Chicago’s children need to thrive at home, at school and at play. Please click here for a full list of needed items. Please place all donations in the appropriately labeled collection pod located at the edge of NSCI’s North Parking Lot near the school entrance. 

 

Annual High Holy Days Food Drive September 2021

Help stock The ARK’s food pantry by donating kosher, non-perishable food. Please place all donations in the appropriately labeled collection pod located at the edge of NSCI’s North Parking Lot near the school entrance.  Click here for a full list of needed grocery items.

 

Animal Treats & Toys Collection for Paws Chicago

Support PAWS Chicago in its work to help homeless pets. Purchase supplies from their Wishlist and have them sent directly to PAWS Chicago! Donations can also be dropped off at NSCI’s Administrative office outer lobby during regular business hours (Mon–Thurs, 9am– 5pm and Fri, 9am–4pm). Call ahead to let us know you’re coming: 847-835-0724.

 

 

Family Promise Chicago North Shore needs our help!

Most needed right now is Clorox/Lysol cleaning supplies, paper towels, water bottles and baby wipes. Additionally, they are in need of $25 gift cards for Jewel and Target. Donations can be dropped off at their Evanston Center (1417 Hinman Ave, Evanston), Monday-Saturday from 10am-6pm. After being buzzed into the church building, please leave donations on the front marble table marked "Family Promise." If you bring gift cards, please phone first so that a member of the Family Promise staff can meet you at the door: (847) 475-4500. Questions or need help getting your donations to Evanston? Call Ann Weisberg at (847) 254-0579. 

 

Additonally, please help provide meals to our Family Promise guests until we can once again welcome them into our congregational homes. You're invited to prepare a home-cooked meal or support our local restaurants and have food delivered to the Day Center where they are currently staying. And if you'd like, you're welcome to bring your own family and enjoy a socially-distanced meal together.

Feed the Homeless Update

Sign up online to purchase the ingredients and make sandwiches for The Night Ministry, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing essential services to Chicago’s food insecure and transient population. We have agreed to make 125 sandwiches each date listed below, and invite you to sign up here to make a minimum of 25 sandwiches. For those interested in a larger mitzvah project, perhaps as part of a b'nei mitzvah celebration or other family simcha, you may sign up to make as many as the full 125!

Love Your Neighbor:  How To Help

As a caring community, we strive to meet the growing needs of our NSCI family. During this time in particular, we are aware that these needs are constantly changing. If you are able to lend a hand to someone in need (phone call check-ins, etc.) please let us know HEREAs we become aware of needs in our community, a member of the NSCI staff or lay leader will be in touch with a specific task.

Doing Acts of Loving-Kindness for Neighbors 

Highland Park welcomes fabric mask donations:  click HERE for sew and no-sew patterns on the City's website. Completed face coverings may be donated in the City of Highland Park's Payment Drop Box, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in the Hazel Street Parking Lot adjacent to City Hall, or during normal business hours, they can be left at the rear entrance of City Hall. Mask donations should be placed in a plastic bag and labeled large or small, or kids/adults.

 

Use sidewalk chalk or hang signs to share positive messages to lift the spirits of neighbors walking or driving by.

 

Donate blood and platelets with the American Red Cross (HERE) or NorthShore University HealthSystem (HERE) to help ensure blood is available for those who might need it.

 

Order take-out or purchase gift cards to support local restaurants who closed their dining rooms to slow the spread of COVID-19.
