Israel National Holy Days - Jewish Space and Time This two-part series will look at how, in its early years, the State of Israel created sacred space on Mt. Herzl in Jerusalem, as well as a series of three Holy Days to commemorate and remember the Shoah (Yom HaShoah ve HaGevurah), the heavy price of our fallen soldiers (Yom HaZikaron), and to celebrate independence (Yom Ha'Atzmaut). In the first session, we will explore the three sections of Mt. Herzl (also known as the Mountain of Memory/Har HaZikaron) - the graves of the founder of political Zionism, Theodor Herzl and many of our political leaders, the Yad Vashem memorial to the victims of the Shoah, and the military cemetery which reminds us of the heavy price of Jewish sovereignty. The second session will explore the significance of the new sacred space of Mt. Herzl and the importance of the three national Holy Days in order to truly understand contemporary Israeli society.
