BORSCHT, SCHMALTZ, AND BEYOND
As depicted in the television series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, the Catskills were
known for resort hotels with huge amounts of food and entertainment. Besides giving heartburn, the food became emblematic of Jewish cuisine in America; and the entertainment, from Joan Rivers to Danny Kaye, to Jackie Mason, to Sammy Davis Jr. --  influenced the popular culture of America. We will look at the history and how a Jewish section not far from the Sleepy Hollow of Rip van Winkle became integral to the entertainment industry.
