Presented by Dr. Suzanne Brown-Fleming, Senior Project Director, International Academic Programs
In 1947, a US military tribunal sentenced Oswald Pohl to death for his role as chief of administration for the sprawling SS concentration camp universe. He exploited forced laborers and oversaw the sale of Jewish prisoners’ possessions to benefit Nazi Germany, including jewelry, gold fillings, hair, and clothing. While imprisoned after his conviction, Pohl converted to Catholicism. In the month before his execution in 1951, Pohl received a special blessing from the Pope. Join us to explore the Vatican’s campaign to reduce or reverse sentences for high-ranking Nazis such as Pohl, among the revelations emerging from archives opened just a few years ago.
