Austrian-born Hermine Santrouschitz suffered malnourishment during WWI and was sent to live with foster parents in the Netherlands for health reasons. She ended up staying with the foster family, was given the nickname Miep, and moved with them to Amsterdam. Later, Miep worked for Otto Frank and became the family’s protector during WWII.
