7th Grade

7th graders participate in class on Tuesdays 4:15-6:15pm for “Becoming a Jewish Adult.”  Monthly, this class includes a Moving Traditions class designed to combine exploration of teen issues with Jewish sources and community building taught by our rabbis or youth group advisors.

So, you’re a Jewish adult…now what?  Join us as we explore Jewish identity—what it looks like for others and for you as and individual -- and Jewish Ethics,  including the purpose of prayer, concepts of mitzvot (commandments), kavod (honor), bushah (insult), tzedakah (righteous deeds), and gemilut chasidim (acts of loving kindness). In this discussion-based class, students are often presented with difficult situations and encouraged to formulate an opinion and debate solutions. This course includes discussions about modern day anti-Semitism and an in-depth look at the Holocaust from a uniquely Jewish perspective.

Additional optional opportunities:

7th grade Jr. Machonik (teen aide):  Sundays 9:00-11:00am or Wednesdays 4:15-6:15pm

If your student likes working with younger students and learns best when teaching something to someone else, they are invited to help Dr. Goodman and the teachers by being a Jr. Machonik on Sundays or Wednesdays. They are expected to attend monthly Sunday training sessions. Help is always needed midweek with Hebrew in 3rd or 4th grade classes or Individualized Instruction, as a tutor, as well as on Sundays in classrooms.

6th-12th grade Selah:  Sundays 10:00-11:00am & select Fridays 5:15-7:15pm

Selah is a group of 6-12 graders who sing and/or play musical instruments, under the guidance of Cantor David Goldstein and noted songleader and composer, Alan Goodis. Selah creates ensembles to lead worship and become comfortable with songleading. Selah members participate in leading High Holy Day, Shabbat and other holiday services.  Selah rehearses and leads services at some Shabbat Services on Friday nights from 5:15–7:15pm and on some holidays. (Dates TBD)
