5-6th Grade

We meet students two days a week: on Sunday and either Tuesdays or Wednesdays to study Hebrew and explore Jewish studies. These grades have the most options to align with student’s interests, so please feel free to reach out to our Education Director, Dr. Roberta Goodman, to create the best experience for your child.  Also, we invite families to join in a few times a year for events to prepare for the upcoming B’nei Mitzvah. Students unable to attend Tuesday or Wednesday have a 3 hour Sunday option 9:00am-12:00pm. Please contact Dr. Goodman for more information.

Choices for the Year:

5th & 6th Grade Prayer Hebrew

Do you like playing games? Working in teams? This class focuses on learning to read and/or chant Hebrew prayers through games, technology, and fun drills. Students can explore the meaning of the prayers by asking big questions that are life-relevant. This class is a two-year cycle covering the prayers used in our midweek and Shabbat services.

5th & 6th Grade Hebrew Plus PLus

Do you like moving around, doing active, multi-sensory, fanciful things while learning Hebrew? Want to learn both how to speak modern Hebrew and read prayers? This class offers both disciplines whereas our other Hebrew classes focus primarily on teaching prayers. In this class students are assigned to class section based on modern Hebrew experience and mastery, from beginning to intermediate, by Dr. Goodman.  This class is offered only on Tuesdays.

5th & 6th Grade Prayer through the Visual Arts

Want to work with pastels, chalk, ink, clay, silk, and dozens of other materials while learning Hebrew at the same time? We invite you to the Art Studio to learn new techniques and gain exposure to Jewish artists. You’ll play with different media exploring and interpreting prayers, and enhance your prayer reading skills.

5th & 6th Grade Prayer Jamming

Do you play a musical instrument or two? Do you like singing in a choir or in the shower? Cantor Goldstein, Alan Goodis, Machoniks, and Selah members invite 5th and 6th graders to bring their voices, guitars, ukuleles, drums, and wind, brass or string instruments (piano provided) for a Jewish jam session. Students will increase their musical skills while obtaining insights into prayers and mastering their tunes and words. This class helps lead midweek services for 5th-7th grades.

5th & 6th Grade Individualized Instruction

Do you learn best in a structured, small group, or one-on-one environment? Are you easily distracted? Lynn Friend and her team of professional educators and machoniks are here to assist every child to be successful learning Hebrew and becoming a b’nei mitzvah. Each child in the Individualized Instruction program works on their own Hebrew or Jewish studies learning plan that includes bookwork, computer games, and board/card games.  If you feel this class is appropriate for your child, please contact Dr. Roberta Goodman, Education Director.  Students are only assigned to this class with the approval of the parent(s) and Education Director.

6th-12th Grade Selah (6th grade only)

Selah is a group of 6-12 graders who sing and/or play musical instruments, under the guidance of Cantor David Goldstein and noted song leader and composer, Alan Goodis. Selah creates ensembles to lead worship and become comfortable with song leading. Folk, rock, jazz, and more are all part of the program.  This class also includes deeper investigations of Jewish studies and taking responsibility for Jewish living and learning.  Selah members:

  • Participate in leading Shabbat and High Holy Day Services
  • Serve as machoniks, music mentors, to the 3rd & 4th grade Jr. Selah class and the 5th & 6th grade Prayer Jamming Class
  • Help lead Midweek Hebrew School services

Selah rehearses and leads services at our L’Dor Vador Shabbat Services on Friday nights from 5:15 pm–7:15 pm (please see the calendar for specific dates) and on the High Holy Days.
