11th Grade

8th-12th grade:  Tough Jewish Conversations: Wrestling with Today’s Real Issues

Monthly, Mondays 6:00-7:30pm.  This class includes dinner.

As Jews we are brought into difficult conversations. How do I love Israel and live with discomfort about things I see in the news? How do I respond to antisemitism in my everyday life? Why do I have to acknowledge my privilege, anyway? We face these questions in school, with friends and on Instagram, and we often don’t know how to respond. In this class we will learn, argue and form our own answers so that next time these questions arise, we have something to say!

This year, we will focus on antisemitism, Israel, allyship and more.

Teachers: Rabbis Greene & Daniels and Mady Frischer, with the help of guest speakers and YOU! Yes, there will be opportunities for teen participants to lead class sessions too!

Additional optional opportunities for 8th grade:

8th grade Jr. Machonik (teen aide):  Sundays 9:00-11:00am, Tuesdays 4:15-6:15pm or Wednesdays 5:15-6:15pm

9th-12th grade Machonik (teen aide):  Sundays 9:00-11:00am, Tuesdays 4:15-6:15pm or Wednesdays 5:15-6:15pm

If your student likes working with younger students and learns best when teaching something to someone else, they are invited to help Dr. Goodman and the teachers by being a Machonik on Sundays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays. They are expected to attend monthly Sunday training sessions. 9th-12th grade Machoniks are paid an hourly rate for their work.

6th-12th grade Selah:  Sundays 10:00-11:00am & select Fridays 5:15-7:15pm

Selah is a group of 6-12 graders who sing and/or play musical instruments, under the guidance of Cantor David Goldstein and noted songleader and composer, Alan Goodis. Selah creates ensembles to lead worship and become comfortable with songleading. Selah members participate in leading High Holy Day, Shabbat and other holiday services.  Selah rehearses and leads services at some Shabbat Services on Friday nights from 5:15–7:15pm and on some holidays. (Dates TBD)
