Rabbi Steven S. Mason

Rabbi Steven S. Mason has been the Senior Rabbi at North Shore Congregation Israel since July, 1997.  Previously he was the Rabbi at Temple Beth Am in Buffalo, NY .  A native of Worcester, MA, Rabbi Mason graduated from Bates College in Lewiston, ME, and studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Rabbi Mason entered the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 1973.  After a year of study at the HUC-JIR, Jerusalem Campus, Rabbi Mason returned to the New York school, where he received a Master of Arts in Hebrew Literature in 1976 and was ordained in 1978.  In 1996, Rabbi Mason earned his Doctor of Ministry degree at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, New York school.  In 2003, HUC-JIR awarded Rabbi Mason the honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree.  Rabbi Mason is a Senior Rabbinic Fellow of the Shalom Hartman Institute, Jerusalem, . 

In 1996, Rabbi Mason and Rabbi Niles Goldstein co-authored the UAHC Press publication: Judaism and Spiritual Ethics, based on the thirteenth century Hebrew text Safer Maalot Hamidot.

Rabbi Mason has served as Treasurer, Vice President, and is Past President of the Chicago Board of Rabbis.  He is Past Chairman of the North Shore Fellowship of Rabbis and past Chair of the Glencoe, IL Clergy Association.  Rabbi Mason has been a member of several Task Forces and Committees of the Central Conference of American Rabbis and is a Vice President of the Chicago Association of Reform Rabbis.  He has served as Co-Chair of the Rabbinic Action Committee of the JUF-Chicago and recently served as Co-Chair of the Commission on Synagogue Federation Relations convened by the Chicago Jewish Federation.
